About Borderline River Charters

Snake River History

The geologic history of the Snake River of Hells Canyon and the Salmon River of No Return dates back as far as 300 million years. The earliest known settlers were Native Americans, leaving behind much history including pictographs and petroglyphs on the canyon walls, which can still be seen today. In the early 1800’s journal documentation proves that the Lewis and Clark Expedition also entered the Snake and Salmon River regions and towards the later 1800’s an early mining and homesteading boom took place leaving behind historical remnants.

About Your Guide

Brian Thomas

Borderline River Charters LLC owner and guide Brian Thomas was born in Clarkston, Washington and raised in the Snake and Salmon River country. He received his United States Coast Guard License in 1996 while also attending college at the University of Idaho. Guiding helped Brian pay college expenses towards receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in 1998. After college he worked with his degree in his field of study for several years while also continuing to guide. Furthermore, he also spent a short term operating jet boats and guiding in Alaska on the Talkeetna and Susitna Rivers. Brian’s focus has been primarily on the Snake River in Hells Canyon and the Salmon River in Idaho. Brian has been fortunate to have extensive opportunities to guide and operate jet boats on the entire 115 mile stretch of the Snake River in Hells Canyon from Lewiston, Idaho to Hells Canyon Dam and the lower Salmon River of No Return. Exploring the outdoors and giving people their desired outdoor experience has been a big part of Brian’s lifestyle for more than 20 years. Hobbies include spending time on the river with his wife and two boys, hunting, fishing, team roping, packing, and coaching youth sports.
